Scaling a mobile gaming app to meet global demand
Industry: Mobile Gaming
Region: EMEA + Global
Company Size: Mid-market (200–500 employees)
Use Case: Backend refactor for scalability and reliability
Products Used: Amazon ECS, EC2, Terraform, MongoDB (sharded + replicated), Jenkins
Company Overview
A leading mobile gaming company, running one of the most downloaded action titles in its category, was struggling to maintain service performance during traffic spikes. As the number of monthly active users grew, backend latency and full outages began to impact both user experience and revenue. VeUP was brought in to architect and implement a new scalable infrastructure strategy using AWS.
Challenge
The customer’s Java backend, hosted on legacy EC2 instances and manually scaled MongoDB clusters, couldn’t keep up with sudden user surges. Backend delays, inconsistent uptime, and deployment friction were affecting global expansion plans, especially in new European markets.
Solution
VeUP re-architected the infrastructure using:
- Amazon ECS with autoscaling EC2 tasks and instances
- A fully replicated and sharded MongoDB cluster deployed across multiple AZs, with automation for scaling and failover
- Infrastructure-as-Code with Terraform for repeatability and control
- A CI/CD pipeline with Jenkins to automate both software and infrastructure changes
This transformation unlocked horizontal scale and observability, helping the platform respond to real-time player demand dynamically.
““The VeUP team delivered more than stability — they gave us the confidence to grow. Our infrastructure scales cleanly now, and that’s critical for player retention.””
